The new jukebox musical “Rock of Ages” is set in an L.A. club during that glorious hair-band heyday when ’80s power ballads got groupies grooving.
And grinding.
The show features enough strippers to keep a Champagne room at the Penthouse Club hopping.
So how did a group of stage hoofers learn how to work a pole? Kelly Devine, an assistant choreographer on “Jersey Boys,” created the moves.
“The dancing is very in-your-face,” she says. “I wanted to tap into the movement of the ’80s. It was way before hip hop, and it was all about the strut and big hair flips.”
Big, indeed. The hole in the ozone layer gets exponentially more gaping from each performance of “Ages,” now in previews and opening Oct. 16 at New World Stages (340 W. 50th St.) with a cast that features American Idol alum Constantine Maroulis and “Hair” star Will Swenson.
The show mixes and matches a roster of power-rock hits from Journey and Poison, with songs like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “The Final Countdown.”
